april & may whispers // my first monthly recap in a long time (writing snippets & lots of books)

I know I SAID I was back for good and honestly I thought I was but then I wrote one post, and then left.

I”m SORRY!! Genuinely. I kinda forgot that blogging includes…coming up with real post ideas? Question marks all round? Because i thought it was just posting update post after update post on my boring life…no?

Well here’s another update post! I haven’t done a monthly wrap-up in SO LONG (just weird snippets of life posts) and I MISS IT. I love having monthly recap posts to look back on to see all the fun and stressful things I was up to! And now I don’t really have that? Also, I love wrap-ups in general THEY’RE SO MUCH FUN TO READ AND WRITE.

But after this, I am promising to myself and everyone else that I WILL be back to blogging! Properly. For me that means at least doing one post a week. Which might not seem like a lot but for someone who’s been really off and on with blogging for a really long time now,,, that’s a big commitment. (But i’m gonna do it! For this quarantine at least. When I go back to school, I will be disappearing again oops)

(oh my god…the last official recap i done was MARCH 2019?!?! It’s been more than a year. I’m out of practice)

(all hyperlinks take you to my Goodreads review!)

APRIL // 9 books

Red White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuinston ★★★★☆ // Whatever I say about this book has already been said before but yes I LOVED IT!!! Best banter, so hopeful, so funny, and obviously – best romance ever!! Someone love me the way Alex and Henry love each other, please :(( ’m really excited for this author’s next book One Last Stop!

The King of Crows by Libba Bray (Diviners 4) ★★★★☆ // It’s hard to explain my feelings of a finale to one of my favourite series of all time but this was so, so beautiful and I love these characters SO much! I’m so sad to say goodbye to them 😦

Heartstopper by Alice Oseman (webcomic) ★★★☆☆ // I DID IT!!! I finally read this. And I enjoyed it so much! Nick and Charlie are so SOFT and I love reading each update about them.

The Winner’s Curse ★★.5☆☆☆ // This was…okay? I didn’t have any strong feelings about it but I enjoyed Kestrel’s character a lot.

Peter Pan by J.M Barry ★★★★☆ // This is a really awkward rating…because I found a lot of this really boring but when I reached the end I WAS SOBBING. I cannot explain how much those last few pages affected me. I haven’t cried at a book like THIS (weeping, sobbing, everytime i stopped crying I would think of the ending and start crying again) in a very long time. Also reading and watching analysis of this story and what it means? My favourite thing to do.

Circe by Madeline Miller ★★★.5☆☆ // I didn’t love this book like a lot of people do. I still enjoyed it and of course, the writing is just beautiful!

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor ★☆☆☆☆ // The fact that Laini Taylor wrote my favourite duology of all time…AND THEN WROTE THIS!? I am heavily disappointed. This book was literally just…insta-love. And I hated it.

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Hann ★.5☆☆☆☆ // I decided to re-read a favourite of mine (This was a 4 stars the first time I read it) and TURNED OUT I HATED IT. I hated Lara Jean and Peter SO MUCH. I couldn’t stand Lara Jean’s immaturity and stupidity.

The Winner’s Crime by Marie Rotski ★★★.5☆☆ // I liked this much better than the first book! I continue to LOVE Kestrel’s character and I was very invested in the romance (the ending had me pulling my hair out!)

MAY // 16 books

16 books! Let that sink in! That’s about a ⅓ of the books that I read in total in 2019. I read that in ONE MONTH. To be fair, some of them were really light, fluffy contemporaries so…But! I’m still proud of myself for reading almost everyday. (And while I think quality > quantity it’s more that I’m glad I’m reading a lot like I used to and making time for it?)

Foolish Hearts by Emma Mills ★★★.5☆☆// my first emma mills book!! and it did not disappoint! Overall, this was a really cute fluffy ADORABLE contemporary novel.

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald ★★☆☆☆// i mean maybe i’m stupid but i thought this was… alright. not terrible, but not spectacular either? However, I really enjoyed the atmosphere and certain characters (Daisy!).

Everything Leads To You by Nina LaCour★★★☆☆ // this has been on my TBR FOREVER but i’m so glad i finally picked it up. I found the movie aspect of it SO interesting and the romance was so sweet!

This Adventure Ends by Emma Mills ★★☆☆☆// This was…not as good as Foolish Hearts and it felt very predictable. this book wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t great either.

Famous In A Small Town By Emma Mills ★★★☆☆// ANOTHER EMMA MILLS BOOK. What can I say they are short and sweet. Foolish Hearts remains superior but the romance was good and I was living for the mac n cheese appreciation.

The Falcon’s Maltester by Anthony Horowitz ★★★☆☆// Some good childhood nostalgia!!

If We Were Villains by M.L Rio ★★★★★// I’m so glad I re-read this!! I love James and Oliver so much and this story is just…exactly My Vibe. Also that ending?? STILL HEARTBROKEN.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen ★★★★★// My first five star of the year that’s not a re-read and IT WAS A CLASSIC. Anyways, Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet are such a power couple.

Always Never Yours by Emily Wibberly ★★★.5☆☆ // This was so cute!! I loved the romance so, so much AHHH. Also the Romeo and Juliet premise was super cool.

All The Bad Apples by Moira Fowley-Doyle ★★★★☆// MY FAVE AUTHOR EVER!! I’ve been wanting to read this forever and I finally did and IT WAS SO GOOD AHHH!! It was so delightfully feminist and spooky!

Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust ★★★☆☆// This was super enjoyable! I liked the first half better than the second but I loved how morally-grey the characters were.

The Henna Wars by Adiba Jaigirdar ★☆☆☆☆ // THIS BOOK WAS SO BORING!! The romance was bland, the writing was bland, and the narrative voice felt so childish…and cringey. I am: disappointed.

Wild Beauty by Anna-Marie McLemore ★★★★☆// a re-read!! This book is so beautiful that I want to tattoo it on my skin.

The Abyss Surrounds Us by Emily Skrutskie ★★.5☆☆☆// This was okay? I enjoyed it? But it didn’t really do anything for me. The plot and romance was okay. I don’t have much to say apart from…I don’t get the hype.

You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle ★★★★★ // This is an Adult Romance book. I did NOT expect to love this so much. I did NOT expect it to become one of my favourite books ever! But this was SO FUNNY! (I know! A book! Funny! This is like, against the law) The romance was EVERYTHING. This book has put me in an Official Book Hangover (it feels like forever since that has happened) I may have re-read the last half of this book like 2 times already. I am physically incapable of doing anything but think about Nicholas and Naomi.

So obviously I haven’t done a book haul in forever so here are books I’ve acquired recently (and my sister bought all of these for me!! Which I am very grateful for) (also I can’t be bothered to take a picture, sorry)

The Starless Sea (the hardback is SO beautiful)
Strange The Dreamer
The Sky is Everywhere
Pride and Prejudice

I feel like I’ve been giving sufficient updates on my life in well…all of my recent posts. But!

-It was Ramadan! Surprisingly fasting wasn’t this year…I just got so bored at home and WANTED TO EAT.
-Eid was obviously very different as we couldn’t visit family! But it was still a very pleasant day and I went for a walk in the park!
-I watched a lot of shows and movies during Ramadan (The End of The F***ing World, The Half Of It (which I didn’t enjoy), Love Simon, The Great Gatsby and a few more!) which I’m glad. I have a list of about 70 movies and series I want to watch during self-isolating and I’m slowly making my way through it!
-I updated my About Page (it has been a mess for WAY too long)

-I did not win Camp Nano (i lost motivation after 10 days of going strong) I DID write 10k+ though! Here are some snippets…(they are both about the library OOPS)

-And uhmmm I think that’s it?? This section is so short compared to usual.

I really miss having monthly goals, forgetting all about them, and accidentally accomplishing only 2 out of the millions I had :(( So we’re back baby!!

-start doing prep for Sixth Form
-make pic crews for your characters
-get back into coding!! I love it so much and i promised myself i’d do it when I had free time :((
-read 12 books at least (and make time for reading everyday, no matter how little)
-write at least 3 more new scenes for your WIP
-watch 5 new movies on your list (or start a series)
-drink one bottle of water a day (at least)
-post at least 3 times
-catch up on goodreads reviews
-request 2 ARCs (netgalley or physical)

how was your may? what are your plans for june? (even though most us are still social distancing) what’s your recent favourite book? and what are you currently reading?

June is my birthday month which is exciting! On June 10th I will be turning sixteen!! Which is kinda…overwhelming and I still need to process. You are under no obligation to but if you would like here’s my wishlist if you want to buy me a gift!!

  1. Wow, your writing snippets! I’m intrigued. You writing is so vivid and gives me Erin Morgenstern vibes.

  2. So many great books you mentioned!! 💫 Pride and Prejudice is amazing and it made me fell in love with Jane Austen’s writing. I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy the Great Gatsby as much. It was my first read of the year and I also watched the movie (liked both very much). And, Peter Pan!! I have to read it!! 🤞🏼

  3. I loved reading this post!! Ahh, you read so many amazing books~ I’m so happy you liked Foolish Hearts and I agree it is superior…also, Pride & Prejudice is so good!! I’m rereading it right now and I basically forgot everything and I love rediscovering the icon that is Elizabeth Bennett and of course Mr. Darcy too. Your snippets are amazing!! the last one gave me chills in a good way…that dialogue ahh, I love all your descriptions too. I hope you have a lovely June and happy early birthday!! xx

  4. you read so many books!! can’t relate but i’m in awe :””( i was so skeptical about you deserve each other because i’ve realized that i rarely enjoy romance books enough to rate them higher than 3 stars, but seeing that you loved it has definitely convinced me that i have to read it. i’m so sad you 1-starred the henna wars. i was so surprised by how much i enjoyed it 😂 and OMG!! the winners trilogy!!! one of my OG faves. the angst in the winner’s crime killed me, but ngl, the winner’s kiss was kinda disappointing (this is an unpopular opinion though)
hope you have a great june, ilsa ❤

    1. omg caitlin YESS please read you deserve each other it’s SO GOOD. and if you don’t like it i shall never talk to u again (just kidding hahaha) trust me i am also SAD that the henna wars was disappointing 😦 oh noo i hope i don’t find the winner’s kiss doesn’t disappoint me because I AM INVESTED. thank you i hope you have an amazing June too ❤

  6. i’m so happy you’re back, Ilsa, this was such a fun monthly recap post to read! 😊 i 100% agree with you that TATBILB wasn’t great – Lara Jean was super immature and i just didn’t get the romance ugh! i’m sorry you didn’t enjoy The Henna Wars either, but yay i’m glad you liked Foolish Hearts! i really need to read The Sky Is Everywhere asap, i loved I’ll Give You The Sun and Jandy Nelson’s writing is perfection. 😭

omg your snippets!!!! 😍😍 your writing is so beautiful and atmospheric, i loved all of them!!! also, i agree with you about The Half Of It – while i thought it was ok, it just didn’t live up to my expectations and was kinda confusing??

i’m glad you had a lovely April and May and i hope you have the most beautiful June!! ❤

    1. Thanks so much Ash!! I’ll Give You The Sun is a lot better than The Sky is Everywhere but I just love her writing style SO MUCH and i’m inclined to love everything Nelson writes!! and ahhh i’m so glad you like my writing, that means so much ❤ ❤ And yeah the half of it had some good/cute moments but I expected so much more and the ending felt really messy.

I hope you have an amazing June too ❤ ❤

I’m so glad you had a good Ramadan and Eid! It was definitely different this year but happy that you guys still found a way to make the most out of it ❤️
Love that you are into coding as well! I’ve been trying to learn new languages and I’ve almost forgotten how fun it can be!
Anyway I think I’m rambling now haha but happy early birthday! Hope you have a great oneee 🥳🥳
(Btw sixth form sounds so exciting! Is it like the equivalent to the first year of A levels for you guys?)

  8. Isla I love reading your posts so much!!
You read so many books wow – I’m in awe. But I’ve literally read none of the ones you mentioned (except To All The Boys, which I do love, although I do also agree with what you said haha). Small Town Hearts, RW&RB (has been on there for so so long) and P&P are on my tbr though! Who knows when I’ll get to them though because I just want to reread all!! the!! time!!
also your writing snippets?? wow?? absolutely love your prose – you’re so talented!
Sixth form prep is also so exciting! I’m in year 12 at the moment so if you have anything you want to ask feel free! 🙂
Hope June is amazing for you & enjoy your birthday!💗

    1. Thank you!! I think everyone adored Red White and Royal Blue so I think you will too – it’s such a feel good heart felt story!! and also wow, mood, i’m always tempted to re-read instead of actually tackling my TBR. 12. Ohh I’ve read The Sky is Everywhere! I think I prefer I’ll Give You the Sun though. I just love the arty aspect of it. But the writing in both is exquisite! I really enjoy Jandy Nelson’s writing style.

Also yesss Elizabeth and Darcy foreverrrr ❤
