2018 WRAPPED UP IN BOOKS – A Book Blogging Year In Review (Delicious Pie Charts, Evil Authors That Make Me Cry & Favourites)

2018 was a strange book blogging year!

I admit. I didn’t post as much so my stats dropped by loads, I didn’t read many good books if i’m being perfectly honest, and the year, in general, wasn’t that great. But there were some highlights! And some downfalls. Which I’m going to talk about today! Let’s goooo.

2018 READING STATS

Number Of Books You Read: 68 books on 29th December 2018
Number of Re-Reads: 10
Genre You Read The Most From: FANTASY! I know over here Fantasy and Contemporary are TIED but I read two more fantasy books after I made these pies so ha. I AM A FANTASY LOVER!!!

FAVOURITES OF 2018.

I read a lot of great books in 2018 – but honestly, It didn’t FEEL that great of a reading year. Maybe because I was in a reading slump for most of 2018? Who knows. But here are some of my favourites in no particular order.

DISAPPOINTING BOOKS

14061955250141143135168932333055343250903506853435795940

  • Can you believe Radio Silence is up there for favourites and I Was Born For This is on the disappointing list? I wish it weren’t true. Alice Oseman wrote one wonderful book and then a not so great book?
  • And is it surprising that THREE books about Muslim teen girls disappointed me? Whew.
  • Girl Made of Stars was probably the BIGGEST disappointment since May hyped it up So much and so did everyone else and it just wasn’t that good?
  • AND SEIGE AND STORM?!?! Leigh Bardugo is a QUEEN and then she decided to write THIS piece of trash. the audacity.

Most surprising book

The Summer Of Us FOR SURE! I had no idea what to expect from this strange fluffy contemporary and I ended up really, really enjoying it and I have no idea how. ROMANCE IS NOT MY THING. And yet I loved this with my whole entire heart, HOW!?

Book You “Pushed” The Most People To Read

ACE OF SHADES
BY AMANDA FOODY! I’m not sure if I persuaded anyone to read it, but I definitely let people know about how GOOD it was, and maybe some people picked up because of my screaming? WHO KNOWS. it was SUCH a good book and you should read it right now.

Best Sequel of 2018

Legendary4

LEGENDARY. I have already screamed about this book in other blog posts but it WAS…*whispers* so good. Like my mind is blown. The writing is so magical, and the plot is so sinister and it’s such a beautiful and intricate and elaborate world I AM IN LOVE.

Best book out of your comfort zone

To All The boys I’ve Loved Before – the entire series. I hardly read romance-focused books that are all fluffy and goodness and cookies. But THIS? This was miles out of my comfort zone and I enjoyed the series SO MUCH. I genuinely smiled and laughed countless times throughout the books. It was so much fun and I highly recommend. (The movie was great too!)

Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year?

Can I just say the whole of the Shatter Me series? I got through the whole series in less than a week, and every book was a whirlwind and had me HOOKED. I couldn’t put them down, and I was SO incredibly invested and flew through the pages like they were nothing. I need to read Defy Me so bad and the snippet we got the other day. *hyperventilates*

Book You Read In 2018 That You Would Be Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year?

UHM. I have to mention The Astonishing Color of After because I do want to re-read but not so soon after I have finished. If my love ever dwindles for this book, I shall re-read it and give it all my affection BECAUSE IT’S JUST SO fhdysgfshdgf!!!??

Most beautifully written book read in 2018?

THE NIGHT CIRCUS is SO beautiful. The prose is dripping with golden magical and dreamy adjectives and you’re practically drowning in clouds of wonderful words. I honestly wish to write like her one day.

Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2018?

OTP OF THE YEAR (One True Pairing)

I shall pick the angstiest relationships; I have to pick two – it’s too hard to decide.

JULIETTE AND WARNER are everything. Warner cares so passionately about Juliette and they love each other so much and it’s so beautiful. Jude and Cardan won’t admit they like each other AND THE TENSION between them is real. They are both so cruel and hopelessly in love.

A favourite post you wrote in 2018?

HAHAHAHAHHA I HATE ALL OF THEM. Okay, just kidding!  I really like this post because it was really damn honest. It got more than 100 comments, which is a record for me in terms of 2018 posts, and I just felt it was the first time I really opened up about how I was feeling.

Best moment of bookish/blogging life in 2018?

I don’t think I had something amazing happen to me this year in terms of blogging. I mean V.E Schwab retweeted my tweet which was like, wild.

I think I’m really proud of myself for…coming to terms with the fact that I don’t want to blog that much anymore (?). I know it sounds strange but I don’t know, blogging has been central to my life for 3+ years. That’s a lot. It has become something I rely on. And suddenly, letting it go in a weird sort of way where I didn’t post a lot or obsess over my site, was one the most freeing and best moments of my blogging life. It allowed me to feel less stressed about life in general and start enjoying books again.

One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2018 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2019?

Oh, Muse of Nightmares for sure! I just reserved it from my library so I should be able to read it soon. I’m so excited, I love Laini Taylor’s writing so much and I’m so excited to drown in words again.

Bridge of Clay by Markus Zusak. I loved The Book Thief and got approved for an e-galley of this book which is like WOW!! And i’m so excited to read it, I know it’s going to be amazing.

The Book of Dust by Phillip Pullman because I’ve been meaning to read it for so long AGH. And it’s so pretty also. I have loved and read His Dark Materials so i know I’ll love this.

A Thousand Splendid Suns because I’ve promised so many people I would read this and THe Kite Runner made me cry for 3 years so like, yeah.

Book You Are Most Anticipating For 2019.

  • Agh Finale by Stephanie Garber – I need the conclusion to this amazing and addicting series.
  • Oh and King of Scars because of NINA!! ZENIK!! Also, i will read anything Bardugo writes.
  • THE STARLESS SEA by Erin Morgenstern. I just found out about this book today and I KNOW it’s going to be better than the Night Circus which means I’ll love it even more and I’m crying and screeching.

Let's Whisper

I mean…most of this post was just me screaming about The Astonishing Color Of After but can you blame me? Also, if you haven’t read it, you’re really missing out folks.

But that’s the end of my post! And also the end of 2018, somehow? I hope you guys have an awesome 2019 but let’s be real, it’s gonna be another hectic and strange year and I’m excited but scared to see how life turns out? Tell me about your favourite books that you read this year and some that disappointed you? And what’s a book you can’t wait to get your hands on in 2019?! Tell me how your year went, I’d love to know.

  1. I haven’t read Muse of Nightmares yet either! I loved Strange the Dreamer, so hopefully at some point at the beginning of the year, I can read Muse of Nightmares. I know my library consortium has it.

  2. I read the Night Circus this year (or the end of 2017, who knows) as well, and I was blown away! I can’t believe I waited so long to read it, because the writing was so enchanting. Also, I hadn’t known that Markus Zusak wrote another book, and when I saw Bridge of Clay at the store it was an immediate add onto my TBR! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on that one, and happy new year!! 😀

  3. My top books was Jersey potato pie as read really quick and saw film and made a potatoe bake to feature in a flatlay in honour of the book.

Also read Lullaby really quick; it is short intriguing book. It was great to see the author talk a couple of weeks ago.

Think I want to read tattooist of austwitz.

    1. Oh yes I didn’t even read Ruin and Rising because I began to hate the series so much. I LOVE six of crows though, one of my faves!! I’m pretty confident in King of Scars though because I think the only reason the Shadow and Bone series wasn’t good was because Bardugo was not as an experienced of a writer as she is now?

  4. Yes!! Muse of Nightmares (well actually Strange the Dreamer) is my one of my top must reads next year! I’m so glad you ended up loving To All the Boys because it’s honestly just so fluffy. Fantasy and contemporary are also my favorite genres 💕

I definitely need to read your review now of The Astonishing Color of After because it’s definitely my favorite read this year! Also, I’ve read the Shatter Me series a while back, but I honestly don’t remember much of it now. I guess this is a series I also need to reread in 2019!

Wishing your all the best for the new year!! ☺️❤️

    1. This comment was in my spam folder for some reason?! But anyways! TATBILB was a book I didn’t even expect to love but the fluffiness and romance in the books GOT ME. Oh I put a lot of effort into my Astonishing review so i hope you enjoy reading – that book means so much to me! I love the SHatter Me series so I hope you get a chance to re-read it!

Happy new year and thanks for the comment!

  5. You’ve read some awesome books this year, and I am so happy and proud of you for coming to terms with your feelings about blogging and how this gives you less stress overall, that’s honestly amazing and what matters the most. I mean, what matters the most is that you enjoy reading and enjoy the posts you put out, even if they’re not too regular or anything like that. Anyway I’m glad you’re happy about that! ❤ ❤
I'm SO happy you loved The Astonishing Color, this book was too beautiful it made me want to sob so hard too. I loved it SO much. and yes, The Night Circus is written so beautifully, too, I love it 🙂
I hope you'll get to read The Book of Dust soon, I can't wait to hear your thoughts about it 🙂
I hope 2019 will be an amazing year in books 😀

  6. ILSA, THE PIE CHARTS ARE EVERYTHING. I always admire when bloggers use pie charts, because SO ORGANIZED and I could never, but they’re so beautiful and wow, I just love them. XD

I loved A Thousand Perfect Notes and Caraval too! (I’ve yet to read the other favorites you mentioned, but a lot of them are on my TBR.) I really want to read Legendary, especially since I really enjoyed Caraval.

    I hope you have a wonderful 2019!

    1. I love the pie charts too! I kinda wanna track my reading more using goodreads next year so they’re easier to make because right now I have to count how many books fit a certain criteria and it’s tiring.

I hope you get to Legendary soon, you won’t regret it because i mean TELLA.

Happy new year and thank you!

  7. UGH I SO GET YOU ABOUT THE “SO AND SO” READING YEAR!!! like there were so many books I liked?? But not many to OBSESS OVER?? look last year I read both Lord of Shadows AND Strange the Dreamer so I GUESS nothing can compare but still I WANT MORE GREAT BOOKS PLZ.

(and we both didn’t get to Muse of Nightmares hahahaHA seriously why are we synchronizing at being horrible???)

And I read Night Circus too this year!! I DID NOT LIKE THE ROMANCE but the story was. so magical. so good. Celia is great she could build me a magical tree or kill me and I’d thank her either way. Imagine not reading it in 2013 when it first came out and not having to wait 5 years for another Erin Morgenstern book. wow. what were the chances. i feel like we’re being so lucky here.

And we stan you beautiful penguin queen of self reflection over blogging crisis! your level of trying to give less fucks is inspirational have I mentioned that? I’m over here being proud of youuuuuuuuuuuuuu ❤️!!!!

Also I need to read The Astonishing Colour of After so please just if I haven’t read it by June 2019 SPAM ME UNTIL I READ IT OK. REMIND ME. I NEED TO GET TO IT. IT WILL BE BEAUTIFUL AND GLORIOUS AND I’M JUST STUPID FOR NOT READING IT RIGHT NOW!!!

(Aaaaand I’ve never read His Dark Materials ummm is that something I should do??)

GOOD LUCK AND MAY THE BENEVOLENT SPIRITS BE WITH YOU IN THE 2019 READING CHALLENGE!!

+The Boy Who Steals Houses gets released so like it WILL BE SO GOOD I’M READY

    1. I KNOW I WANT MORE AMAZING BOOKS and yeah lmao my 2017 reading year was full of discovering new series i loved and 2018 was OKAY? I found a few gems but thats it.

OKAY I WILL PESTER YOU FOR ETERNITY if you haven’t read it by June because you must! and i’m hoping you love it and if you don’t then this friendship is over. JUST KIDDING. but like, u better love it.

(His dark materials is gooood but i don’t think you HAVE to read it. it’s middle grade and a bit slow and i feel like i enjoy it more from nostalgia? idk)

i’m not doing the 2019 reading challenge this year because no stress for me, BUT GOOD LUCK TO YOU ANd the boy who steals houses is going to be epic. dfjgdsgfd

      1. I ACCEPT THOSE TERMS AND CONDITIONS FEEL FREE TO DECAPITATE ME VIA GUILLOTINE IF I DON’T READ IT.

look. we all know I’m doing a reading challenge on Goodreads just for the sticker. like. it’s not a secret I admit to being shallow and wanting all stickers. because pretty Goodreads stickers validating my existance.

but this year even the sticker is ugly asdrgjklllalahsj have you seen it??? my rainbow pastel aesthetic is being murdered by it

  8. To be honest, I relate with you so much about how 2018 was a very “meh” year overall. I didn’t read much and had few books that actually blew me away. On top of that, my mental health was all over the place and I pretty much spent the entire year on auto-pilot. I hope that 2019 will be better for all of us!
I’m planning on starting The Dark Materials series this year, but I’m not sure how to feel about it yet. It is a middle grade series, and I haven’t read one in forever. I know it is incredibly popular, and it is my best friend’s favorite book, so I’m still going to give it a chance. I also don’t know what to expect from King of Scars – I feel inclined to read it because I adored Leigh Bardugo’s writing style when I picked up Six of Crows, but I also have no interest in reading the Grisha trilogy, and I feel like I should before reading this one. So many questions, hahahah.
I’m wishing you an amazing end of the year. Even if 2019 is slower for you when it comes to blogging, I hope you continue to post only content you’re happy and comfortable with. It’s okay if they’re not as regular; at the end of the day, what really matters is how you feel about it! 💛

    1. aw, i hope your mental health improves in 2019!! that sucks and you deserve to have all the amazing reads, and to feel happy and loved ❤

it is a middle grade series so the tone is very different from YA an other genres, but i greatly enjoyed (i read it so long ago idk if i'd love it as much now)

i read the first 2 books in the grisha trilogy and i couldnt bring myself to read the last book because it was so bad but i spoiled myself for ruin and rising, so hopefully i'll be able to enjoy kig of scars!!

thank you so much! your support means everything, and i hope ur having a great 2019 so far ❤

  9. Muse of Nightmares is super high up on the list of books I want to read in 2019. I bought a copy in the week it was released and just…never got around to reading it sadly. So it’s been sitting on my bookshelf waiting for me. A few of my favorites overlap with yours – like Radio Silence and Girls of Paper and Fire (I’m like halfway through the audiobook but loving it so far!). Some other favorites are Autoboyography (cannot recommend it enough) and What If It’s Us. It’s been a weird year haha. I think I’m ready for 2019.

  11. I’m so glad to hear you’re feeling less stressed! Your health is most important, so even if you end up only wanting to blog twice a year, that’s okay. Besides we’ll all still be here, just prioritise yourself ❤️ Also I DEFINITELY picked up Ace of Shades because of your constant screaming so thank you for blessing me with it

  12. so I guess shatter me is your favorite trashy series and tfc is my favorite trashy series ?? cool. I kind of want to make a deal where I read the rest of the series and you read tfc but I think it’ll be too painful when you end up hating tfc lmaoooo. also I’m so happy to see Bone Gap on your favorites list!!! and I almost read Ace of Shades (meaning I checked it out from the library) but oh well. promise, this year!! maybe!!!!

and I’m still sad about you not liking GMOS but it’s okay!! and also yes I’m glad you understand my disappointment with HIAYLM, so many people I know love it and I feel bad that I don’t. and aaaahh I’m so excited for King of Scars!! I actually preorder it (me? preordering books?) and I can’t wait for Nina’s chapters (though I still need to read Ruin and Rising lmao)

    Like

    1. i don’t think i’ll hate tfc?? but i’m deffo going to read THE FIRST book this year and if i like it, probably the rest of the series, and if i dont’, wellll. and that deal would be cool but you’d probably hate shatter me sjfjdghf.

YOU PRE-ORDERED KING OF SCARS. i have the like sampler from the publisher but i never read it? oops. AND I’M ONLY READING IT FOR NINA ZENIK BECAUSE I LOVE HER SM. and i tried to read ruin and rising but it was so rubbish and i dnfed but i lowkey know everything that happens in it so hopefully i’ll like kos!!

  13. omg i seriously love your pie charts so much. i want to read ace of shades so badly bc everyone says its such a great heist story (TRYING REALLY HARD NOT TO COMPARE IT TO SOC) and gosh the cover is gorgeous!! im glad you loved a thousand perfect notes, it was SO GOOD

i gotta agree with you on ‘not the girls youre looking for’ and the grisha books we’re pretty awful 🙂 I JUST RANDOMLY GOT THE SUMMER OF US bc i need obscure contemps in my life and NOW IM HYPED FOR IT I CANT WAIT FOR THE STARLESS SEA WHY ISNT IT OUT YET IM SCREAMING. night circus was one of the greatest books ever written, like the writing?? slayed me

GREAT WRAP UP (even tho you ghosted on your fans (me) for too long, jk take as long as you need) BUT IM SO HAPPY WE’RE GETTING MORE POSTS FROM YOUUU 😭💖💖

    1. ace of shades is goooood but the first 100 pages felt super slow for me. but other than that i loved it? i don’t know what you’l think of it, tbh, so i’m lowkey excited for you to love or roast it (i dont even mind, i just love ur reviews sm) .

“not the girls you’re looking for” was more like “not the rep you’re looking for” because that was a hot mess. and honestly, leigh bardugo gives me confidence because if she can write that trash series and then write six of crows, a masterpeice, then i have hope to turn my trash writing into something good.

and the starless sea is actually gonna be the death of me I NEED IT, like the night circus’s writing? the equivalent of heaven.
