A Recap of 2017 in BOOKS (ft. favourites and pie charts and me being indecisive)

The finest kind of torture is asking a bookworm their favourite book of the year.

Becuase 1) how the heck do you expect me to choose and 2) WHAT IF MY ANSWER CHANGES?!

So that’s precisely what I’m doing in today’s post. I love myself so much. I’m linking up to Perpetual Page Turner’s Annual Blog Round Up Thingy and I’m super excited to do this! I won’t be answering ALL the questions because I am too busy stuffing my face with chocolate and fixing all my typos ever.

Best Book You Read In 2017

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo by…not much. I had SO Many amazing reads this year since it was the year I was introduced to ALL the fantasy but I finally settled on this one because I think Kaz is someone who I always love and there are shipping and magical powers and there is darkness and there is Jesper. And it’s exactly the book that introduced to me just about everything.

Long-DividerBook You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t

Love, Hate & Other Filters by Samira Ahmed definitely. I was SO incredibly excited for this book and then…the representation let me down. So down that, I am now in a rabbit hole eating carrots and wondering when to have another identity crisis.

And some more reads that didn’t quite meet my expectations?

Illuminae by Amie KaufmanThere's Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie PerkinsLegend by Marie LuHolding Up the Universe by Jennifer NivenRebel of the Sands by Alwyn HamiltonMiss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Long-DividerMost surprising book

Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia. I JUST DIDN’T EXPECT To LOVE THIS ONE SO MUCH BUT I DID and it was fabulous and it discussed mental illness and it was fabulous because of art!! AND WALLACE. Let’s not forget Wallace.

Long-Divider

A book you recommended people constantly

Starfish by Akemi Dawn. I remember screaming about this to Lu (since I was screamed at by queen over here) and she read it and bought it and some other awesome people also read it which I was extremely happy about. However, no one listens to rambling penguins like me often so this one is a little non-applicable.

Best series you started in 2017

AGH UM AGH UM AGH UM AGH UM….I’m going to go with The Shades of Magic Series BECUASE it is honestly beautiful and I loved every single book and KELL’S COAT and everyone else wins me over every.single.time. Plus i finished AND started this in 2017? GO ME.

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. SchwabA Gathering of Shadows by V.E. SchwabA Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab

Long-DividerFavorite new author, you discovered in 2017

PROBABLY AMANDA FOODY. I love her tweets and I actually just want to hug Daughter of The Burning City about 6789 times BECAUSE IT IS SO GOOD. Go read it! I mean people hated it? BUT IGNORE THEM. It was FABULOUS. Fabulous I must say! ALSO SHOUTOUT TO HER SURNAME.

Long-Divider

Best book from a genre you don’t typically read

Eh. I’m not a massive fan of historical fiction but I absolutely ADORED The Girl In The Blue Coat. It was completely surprising and the plot twist was fabulous and the writing was so emotionally awesome and aghagah why isn’t this one hyped more? I. Loved. It. ANd of course The Book Thief but that’s already got so much fame.

Long-DividerMost beautifully written book read in 2017

Aghhh so MANY. So MANY. But I will say Laini Taylor puts the magic into writing. I absolutely adored Strange The Dreamer and the words were, as I quote from my review, “like quicksand. The more I read, the more I got lost between the words and pages. It’s LIKE ALL THE UNIVERSES dancing around in my brain. It’s like ice cream melting and becoming a sea of flavours.” I am quite proud of that actually. Now I want ice cream. I always want ice cream

Favorite cover of a book you read in 2017

MY EYEBALLS ARE JUST WATERING WITH LOVE. There are so many good covers! TRUST ME I KNOW.

Strange the Dreamer by Laini TaylorFlight of a Starling by Lisa HeathfieldThis Savage Song by Victoria SchwabAn Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret RogersonUndercover Princess by Connie GlynnKids Like Us by Hilary Reyl

Long-DividerBook That Shocked You The Most

UM. Warcross by Marie Lu. I WAS NOT EXPECTING THAT. My heart is still beating 67886 times per second. Becuase the revel for Zero. HAD. ME. GOBSMACKED. Just wow. WELL DONE MARIE LU FOR JUST TAKING AWAY MY SANITY LIKE THAT.

Long-DividerFavorite Non-Romantic Relationship Of The Year

Blue and Ronan from The Raven Cycle! I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. Why doesn’t anyone talk about how GREAT they are? They have one of the best friendships I read in a book and I just adore them so much. I FRIENDSHIP THEM OKAY. Oh, and these are from The Ravn Cycle but their friendship mainly blossoms in Blue Lily, Lily Blue and The Raven King.

“Gansey asked, “Do you have time to run an errand with us? Do you have work? Homework?”
“No homework. I got suspended,” Blue replied.
“Get the fuck out,” Ronan said, but with admiration. “Sargent, you asshole.”
Blue reluctantly allowed him to bump fists with her as Gansey eyed her meaningfully in the rearview mirror.”

Long-DividerBest Book You Read In 2017 That You Read Based SOLELY because of Peer Pressure

Cinder by Marissa Meyer. I don’t think I would EVER have picked this up if it wasn’t for Meyer fans. So I DID despite the ugly cover. I ended up LOVING this one. i haven’t read the other ones mostly because I’m not too addicted! And plus, they’re not even about Cinder mainly. But I WILL GET TO THEM ONE DAY.

Long-DividerBook That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2017

I DO CRY AT BOOKS. And I am in NO way ashamed at that. However, I do think I got a little hard-hearted this year but let me throw you some freaking soul-crushing books.

Paper Butterflies by Lisa HeathfieldOur Dark Duet by Victoria SchwabFlight of a Starling by Lisa HeathfieldChampion by Marie LuCrooked Kingdom by Leigh BardugoThe Young Elites by Marie Lu

Long-Divider27. Hidden Gem Of The Year

DEFINITELY INK AND BONE by Rachel Caine. Obviously Ink and Bone. This is SO underrated but I love this series so much and I cannot wait for the fourth book? It is a book about books about a book lover and it’s got historical fiction and fantasy and dystopia vibes and breaks all the rules and the squad is SO good.

Long-DividerMost Unique Book You Read In 2017

I’ll Give You The Sun by Jandy Nelson was so strange and weird and I have never read a book like it? It was super horrible (the beginning) but towards the end I kind of just melted into a jellyfish because it was so strange but marvellous at the same time!

Long-DividerBook That Made You The Most Mad

As You Wish by Chelsea Sedoti was such a freaking crappy book I cannot even okay!? The main character is a sexist jerk who can go wither away in a black. Plus the writing was SO dry and it took me a MONTH to read. UGH.

Long-Divider

One Book You Didn’t Get In 2017 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2018

Ummm Saints and Misfits! I remember when it was released and just got a sent a copy a while back and DEFINITELY want to make an effort to read it. Plus my copy is signed and came with a beautiful bookmark. AND PLUS MUSLIM REP!?!!?! AND PLUS MY COPY IS *SIGNED* BY THE AUTHOR. *dies*

Long-Divider2018 Release You Are Most Anticipating

(not a debut sorry) Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody. I MEAN DID YOU EXPECT ANY OTHER ANSWER? DID YOU?! DID YOU HAHAHAHAHHA IF YOU DID BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN SCREAMING ABOUT THIS BOOK FOREVER OKAY. But I actually did a whole post on 2018 releases I am screeching for. #awkwardselfpromo

Long-DividerA Sequel You Are Most Anticipating in 2018

MUSE OF NIGHTMARES BY LAINI TAYLOR OMG I AM FOREVER EXCITED I CANNOT WAIT TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS NEXT JUST GIVE THE BOOK TO ME OMG OMG OMG OMG.

Long-Divider

Okie Dokie and that’s it. Remember I DID NOT ANSWER EVERYTHING. Okay? Some I was just repeating myself with a book and I didn’t want to bore. But you thought we were done? Haha, No. NO. I’m going to be copying Cait @ Paper Fury with her gorgeous pie charts. I won’t be doing as many of her but these look SUPER fun.

STAR RATINGS:

ratings

So I actually read A LOT OF good books this year! We can see I am an indecisive pumpkin and am always handing out 3 stars BECUASE MIXED FEELINGS okay?! And there are a lot of fours stars BECAUSE I AM PICKY. And Most of my ratings are above 3 stars which is great!

Where I acquired books from:

aqquired books

AS YOU CAN SEE the library is my LIFESAVER. I didn’t use it much in the last months of 2017 but at the beginning of the year? I was practically camping out there.

Genres Read:

Now, this was probably the most interesting YET. Know why? Because somehow, contemporary was my MOST read this year? WHAT? WHAT?! I am only slightly angry because fantasy is honestly my favourite so this comes as a disappointment to me, honestly.

  2. BLUE AND ROWAN I LOVE THEIR FRIENDSHIP!!!😍❤ I haven’t gotten to the part you mentioned, but whoa what a Rowan thing to say😂
I’m probably gonna be in mourning when I finish The Raven Cycle because, well, you know why😂
    Great post! X

  3. Oh my gosh I love the “A Darker Shade of Magic” Series! So good! I definitely need to read some of these books in the future, they look very interesting. Also, I love your logo and page designs! How did you make them? I am currently trying to make a good logo for my blog, but I’m not sure how to (it’s kind of embarrassing actually, I should probably know this lol). Thanks for the great post :)). Xx, Stell :).

    1. ADSOM IS AMAZING and the rest of the series! I hope you do get round to reading some of these. I actually didn’t design my blog my self –> Emily from Books & Cleverness did. I don’t think she designs blogs anymore but I would try out Canva. Let me know how it goes. x

  4. This post is pretty cool! I really want to do it but I’m utterly SWAMPED with finals right now 😰 I might do it mid-Jan though? This would be so interesting to do.

Also, you didn’t like Love, Hate & Other Filters? What?? I haven’t read it but I was really looking forward to it, hearing the hype! I totally agree with Warcross and Eliza and her Monsters—both of them blew my mind!

    1. Ahhh Mid-january sounds cool! Definitely looking forward to that post then! Plus, then the year is over so your answers will be final?

Yeah it was OKAY but the Muslim rep let me down A LOT and it wasn’t really as mind-blowing as everyone says it to be. I hope you enjoy it though! Warcross and Eliza WERE FABULOUS BOOKS, all the love!

      1. Yep I have slight issue with wrap-ups being done before the time period is over. I HAVE done reading challenge wrap-ups because I know it’ll be weird to fit it all in in the second half of Jan 😂 also because I won’t be reading with finals anyway.

Ah okay. I hope I enjoy it as well!

  5. I think we kinda betrayed fantasy this year?? MY BABY I HAVE NOT ABANDONED YOU IT’S JUST THAT CONTEMPORARY WAS REALLY AMAZING THIS YEAR OK.

I am always worried about your ice cream addiction is winter. Because MUM are you an immortal queen that never gets sick?! If I just see ice cream i start sneezing i swear.

SIX OF CROWS SIX OF CROWS!! Aka the book i re-read this winter because it’s the best!! And Leigh is Queen and Crooked Kingdom killed me and brought me back to life (#rude).

And I too love pie charts!! Like looooook at them they are so clear and visual and pretty. (I am a very visual person SO THEY PLEASE MY SOUL).

And I can’t wait for Ronan and Blue to be the badass friendship we all deserve. Because I didn’t love The Dream Thieves (COUGH) but I am still excited for Blue Lily Lily Blue BECAUSE YOU AND LU HYPED ME UP FOR IT. It’s your fault here.

And can I just say you are the only reason I even heard of Ace of Shades?? Because you were endlessly screaming on Twitter after you got accepted for the ARC?! And look at me now adding it to my TBR without knowing ANYTHING ABOUT IT. Kthx.

    1. CONTEMPORARY WS LIKE SWAMPING ME?! IDK WHY. But I DeFINITELY thnk 2018 will be a fantasy year? BECAUSE SO MANY FANTASY RELEASES –> wow.

“an immortal queen” –> YES. But I DO get sick and I am NOT having ice cream at the moment sadly. BUT I CAN STILL EXPRESS MY LOVE FOR IT, RIGHT? Like, I can’t discriminate against it BECAUSE IT IS winter right?

AND AGH I need to re-read Six of Crows soon! My friend’s borrowing my copy at the moment so i can’t even stroke it daily. *SIGH*

I AM A VISUAL PERSON TOO SO I ABSOULETLY ADORE PIE CHARTS and CHARTS and GRAPHS in general. especially when they are colourful!

BLLB WILL NOT DISAPPOINT. I didn’t like The Dream Thieve either but AGH OMG Blue Lily Lily Blue WILL SALY YOU OMG. Especially if you love Blue. BECAUSE I LOVE BLUE.

I’m SO glad you are excited about Ace of Shades too because of me! LIKE AM GLAD I HAVE PEOPLE HYPED ABOUT IT BECAUSE YES YOU CAN SHARE MY EXCITEMENT.

  6. okay i am also going to this tag it sounds hella fun and i need to do a bookish year recap so yay :))

OKAY LET ME FANGIRL ABOUT BOOKS NOW SIX OF CROWS WAS AMAZINGGGG!!! I’m so glad I decided to read it because it was the first fantasy series I read that was so diverse and beautiful and plot twisty and aggsajhajhjsh I ADORE LEIGH BARDUGO. my favourite book of 2017 was probably Ari and Dante though?? it was the first book I read after getting into book blogging and bOY am I glad I did. It’s just so lovely and sad and heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time?? It also opened up my eyes to so much?? I just,, love it ❤

I read 143 out of my 150 books goal and I'm actually pretty satisfied because I didn't think I'd get this far?? I'll be aiming for 150 next year though, and I really really hope I make it 😀 overall, I think 2017 was an AMAZING reading year for me!! It was the first time I read so many contemporaries?? I was used to just read fantasy and sci-fi but blogging opened me up to so many new and diverse reads ahhh

THERE ARE SO MANY AMAZING BOOKS COMING OUT IN 2018 OMG I'M EXCITED FOR ALL OF THEM. Leah on the Offbeat, Batman, Furyborn, and of course A THOUSAND PERFECT NOTES OMFG I'M SO EXCITED FOR CAIT'S BOOK AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

  7. Oooh I love this post – this is such a great idea I may have to steal it and do a 2017 wrap-up too! 😱 I definitely agree with you about the amazing-ness of the Six of Crows duology! I definitely plan on reading MUCH MORE Leigh Bardugo in 2017 ❤ ❤ ❤

  8. What a great wrap-up! I love all your pictures and charts! 🙂 I completely agree with Six of Crows though – such an amazing duology. I’m sad you were a bit disappointed with Illuminae as I loved that one as well, but I can understand why. It’s definitely not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous post! ❤

  9. i cannot…believe…i mean how dare…the beginning of i’ll give you the sun “horrible.” I AM SCOFFING SO HARD I AM SURE YOU CAN HEAR IT WHEREVER YOU ARE.

but this is a good post and i enjoyed it.

    emotional rollercoaster though, my friend.

  10. Ahh I love Ronan and Blue’s friendship. I also love that bit where Adam thinks something about Ronan and Blue that basically equates to “they were two sides of the same coin” but obviously more poetic because this is Maggie Stiefvater we’re talking about. And Cinder actually turns up quite a lot on the later books in the series. I’d say at least 2/5 of book two is from her perspective.

    Liked by 1 person

  11. Awesome statistics! I love ALL the friendships in The Raven Cycle, to be honest hahaha.
If you enjoyed Cinder’s writing style and theme, you should give Scarlet a try, I actually preferred the second book to the first one. I also picked the series up because of all the hype surrounding it. It’s not the most amazing series ever, but they’re great reads.

  12. INK AND BONE IS EXTREMELY UNDERRATED I WILL FOREVER SCREAM ABOUT IT NOT BEING READ ENOUGH BY THE COMMUNITY UUUUGHHHHH. especially with a hijabi in fantasy!! and being so kicka*s!!! (even tho I’m not Muslim, that scene in A&Q with the guard almost made me cryyyyyy)

and wow so many 3 stars… I really hate 3 stars because they’re so in between, but I think I should rate a lot more books 3 stars??? I rated a lot of things 4 stars tho, mostly because I was really nice in the beginning of 2017 oops

okay yikes you actually chose SINGLE books for the categories??? I just put in so many book covers for the categories lmaooo OH WELL. and omg Warcross shook me so much!!! I kind of suspected one of the plot twists (okay, a lie, I did not) but the other one came out of nowhere.

new favorite author… Amanda Foody… hmmm… didn’t you read more of Schwab’s books and loved them all… hmmmmmm

EW YOU READ SO MANY HISTORICAL FICTION BOOKS I’M NOT TALKING TO YOU ANYMORE

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I KNOWWWW I DONT UNDERTSAND WHY ITS SO UNDERRATED I LOVE IT SO MUCH!! And yes!! KHALILA is even more bad-ass in Smoke and Iron!! Next year, I’m probably not going to do single books for each one ahaha I BECOME MORE INDECISIVE AS THE YEAR OES ON!! Yes but AManda Foody is great okay and Schwab already gets to much hype. ONLY 5% OF MY READS WERE HSTORICAL FICTION, whaT are you screaming about?

  13. You have to finish the Cinder series because you just have to! The first book is like the worst one and it only gets better from there! (my personal fav is the third book, Cress because this is when you meet Thorn and I just love him!) Also I LOVE Six of Crows (kaz and inej!!!) I also finished A Darker Shade of Magic series by V.E. Scwab this year and it is now one of my top series ever! (because of kell, lelia and the fantastic magic!) Glad to see you read so many great books this year!
