Top 10 Reasons Why I Love Fantasy to the Moon and Back + 10 Fantasy Recommendations From Yours Truly // My History + A Tag

I love a bit of stabby galore, magical dragons, and wondrous spells.

In case you’ve been living under a rock or maybe just too busy eating ice cream (which is why you haven’t realised that i have kidnapped your souls and devoured them. AHEM), you would know that I absolutely LOVE FANTASY!

It is by far my favourite genre of all time (NOT SAYING I don’t LIKE OTHER GENRES) but something about the genre (actually 10 things about the genre) really get me! So… let’s go, go go!

Long-Divider1. M.A.P.S

MAPS. O.M.G. M.A.P.S –> I freaking LOVE MAPS SO MUCH. Books with illustrations are immediately AMAZING and then if one of those illustrations are maps? EXCUSE ME JUST TAKE ALL OF MY MONEY. I’m yet to see a contemporary book with a map (FITE ME) I mean what is NOT TO LOVE.

Short-Divider

  • Aesthetic
  • i mean come on look how pretty they are
  • *heart eyes*
  • And like extra world-building!
  • which i obviously care about
  • plus they give a lot of backstories and setting to the world
  • DID I MENTION THEY ARE PRETTy

2. Magic

I absolutely LOVE books with a magical premise. And while not all fantasy HAS MAGIC (#rude), I love seeing different magical systems and spells and I LOVE THE MAGICAL VIBES IN BOOKS OKAY??? Pluuuuss, I want to become a wizard (I am nearly qualified) so these books are very educational. *coughs*

Long-Divider

3. Escape the ugly reality of life

I mean you can do this with sci-fi and magical realism (?) but fantasy is usually a WHOLE NEW WORLD and while that whole new world is usually a very bad and dark place (otherwise what is the plot here, you mindless cucumber?) it’s so much fun to get lost in a whole new different story and go on adventure and LOVING THE CHARACTERS!

Long-Divider

4. THE STRESS

Let’s be real. FANTASY IS SO STRESSFUL. You stress about the characters and the plot AND IT’S ALL INCREDIBLY EXPLODING OKAY? just splatter my feels across that brick wall, WHY DON’T YOU? I swear sometimes I care more about the book than my own life. Like i’m pretty chill with my life but I’ll be crying ugly tears over some beautiful villains in a book. AND YES, BEAUTIFUL VILLAINS.

Long-Divider

5. All the darkness!

This applies to epic and dark fantasy which IS OBVIOUSLY AMAZING and I LIVE FOR IT but we get the most wonderful villains and baddies and super dark plot twists and STABBY STUFF. I love stuff that stabs? BLOOD AND MURDER are two scones I would eat if I could. I was only introduced to this genre recently and I AM SO IN LOOOOOVVVVEEE. ASDFGHJKL

Long-Divider6. Delicious writing style

I’m not saying other genres don’t HAVE good writing styles but have you seen V.E Schwab’s writing style HAVE YOU SEEN ANY FANTASY BOOKS WRITING STYLE?Scrumptious and delicious and so beautiful to devour and speaking of DELICIOUS…

Food. I mean there also fantasy FOODS? Which is THE BEST IDEA EVER! I need all these fantasy foods with very nice descriptions now HANDED TO ME ON A PLATE. thanks.

Long-Divider

7. AMAZING CHARACTERS (+NAMES)

Can we just appreciate how fantasy has the best character names? I mean contemporary ones are utterly boring, to be fair but USUALLY fantasy has super cool names like Kell (and his coat) but sometimes SOMETIMES they are still boring like Kate but I UNDERSTAND not every character can have a cool name? And you know what makes up for that? The wonderful character development we get from fantasy.

Take a look at my favourite fantasy books and you’ll see we get some bad-ass heroines or really cool heroes. AND I LOVE THIS. I mean take a look at Kaz Brekker, he’s a super genius and smart and evil but he has this tragic backstory and I CRY OKAY. and this is just one example BUT IT IS TRUE OKAY?

Long-Divider
8. Series

Is there actually a fantasy standalone? WHAT NO. I am pretty sure this DOES NOT EXIST. There’s nearly always a sequel or series to fantasy books and while this can cause the end of the world (cover changes, monstrous TBR) I love getting invested in a story and painfully waiting for new books and then fangirling over them. AND you can just binge-read series and I LOVE SERIES OKEE?

Long-Divider

9. 3rd person!

I find with a lot of contemporaries (OKAY I AM JUST FINDING EXCUSES TO TRASH CONTEMPORARY)  are like little stars BUT THERE ARE SO MANY STARS. And fantasy? I REMEMBER THEM. Look, I know I am a goldfish but all contemporaries MOSTLY seem the same to me, but fantasies are all different and diverse and perfect! and you know WHY They’re so unique, it’s because most of them are in…

YEAH FOR 3rd person (it’s basically he, she, it, they etc..) and most fantasies are told in this which sets them apart. Everyone sounds the same in 1st person so I’m not sure WHICH ~I~ prefer but a lot of people like  3rd better than 1st SO I’ll just go with it okay??

Long-Divider10. Mythical Creatures

DRAGONS. HOBBITS. GOBLINS. ELVES. MONSTERS. You name it! Now a lot of people don’t like fantasy with mythical creatures but I personally love it. It’s adding a whole new element of excitement and some of them are very smol and different creatures are really nice sometimes. *heart eyes*

R E L A T E D

Thank you to Lu @ It’s Lu Again for inspiring me to write this post! I absolutely LOVE fantasy so this gave me some ideas and was super fun to write!! You are amazing, honestly.

Short-Divider

But if this could not get long enough I was tagged just today (OMG i’m doing a tag on the same day?) for This is my favourite genre, what’s yours book tag’ and I want to Elle Online for giving me the chance to do this!

1. What is your favourite genre?

My favourite genre is fantasy! (duhh this whole post) I do love most all genres including magical realism, mystery, contemporary, sci fi and historical fiction but fantasy just tops them all. Fantasy and Me are my OTP! (that rhymed?)

2. Who is your favourite author from fantasy?

I absolutely think V.E Schwab deserves this title. I love Leigh Bardugo and Marie Lu as well as others but Schwab is just MASTER of writing fantasy. And whilst I haven’t read all of her books (i cry) I am still maddeningly in love with every book she writes.

3. What is it about fantasy that keeps pulling you back?

UM SEE the WHOLE POST ABOVE PLEASE.

4. What book started your love for fantasy?

Though I did read Harry Potter as my first fantasy, I didn’t read any more fantasy after that so it honestly did NOT get me into the genre. I feel Six of Crows really shone the light for me and got me binge-reading everything from the genre.

5. One Fantasy Recommendation for beginners

Well…for a beginner? AGH that’s tricky but I’d go with The Young Elites by Marie Lu. It’s dark, has a great magical atmosphere, and not too daunting. I feel lots of fantasy books are VERY long books so I’d start off with these. Also, Marie Lu is fabulous. You can thank me later.

6. Why do you read?

SORRY IS THIS SUPPOSED TO BE A QUESTION? I love to read because…

  • amazing characters
  • i want to hug them all
  • villains
  • evil!!
  • escaping to a whole new world
  • BOOKS
  • it is super fun
  • addicting
  • a bit like drugs
  • plot
  • twists
  • beautiful writing
  • INTERESTING
  • I am gripped

Honestly, there are so many reasons WHY I LOVE TO READ so?? This is kind of hard to answer.

Oh and if YOU want to be tagged LET ME KNOW! Here are the questions and you can go ahead and answer them in the comments or in your own posts! Let me know if you do respond to this tag.

My history with fantasy.

A long, long time ago there was a girl who only read contemporary. She used to call these ‘life books’ because they were about life. And she read Harry Potter but never ventured further. Fantasy was a myth to her, dragons and magic seemed so silly. Then blogging came along AND SHE FREAKING FELL IN LOVE WITH FANTASY.

The end.

Let's Whisper

What is YOUR favourite genre? Don’t you just love books with magic, stabbing, pirates and dragons? AND AREN’T MAPS JUST BEAUTIFUL??? Have your genre tastes changed over the years? Do you prefer 1st or 3rd person? TELL ME YOU AMAZING CREATURES OF THE WORLD.

  1. YES I LOVE FANTASY SOOO MUCH ❤ It was the genre that got me into reading actually ha ha
Also did you click all those pictures yourself??? Daaaaamn. Serious photography skills.
I've grown to accept contemporaries, and other stuff, but fantasy is closest to my heart. It's so?? It's magical (mostly). You get to go on such an amazing journey, and it's so much *fun*, and like you said the CHARACTERS. ajskjgakl.
Can we talk about the books you recommended?? THE RAVEN CYCLE IS SO I CANNOT EVEN. Like,,, I hardly know anyone who has read it but seriously the characters are awesome, the plot is awesome, and the ships omggg. I die. And everyone loves Six of Crows so I'm not going to talk about that (because that would lead to INTENSE FANGIRLING and there's already a lot of that in this comment). I really really want to read This Savage Song, Red Queen, and Strange the Dreamer!! I've heard so much about all of them but I don't have the tiiiiiiiiiime. :((
(Next time I need to convince some stupid mundanes that fantasy is actually the best genre, I'm going to be using *several* points from this post. So thank you for helping me build up my debate skills!)

I prefer first person ’cause I don’t like too much of that ‘he goes’, ‘she comes’, ‘there they go’ stuff!! It starts feeling a little awkward, I guess!! Thank you for doing my tag!! I loved reading your funny answers!! And on a rather serious note, Ilsa *evil angry face* I’m ELLE ONLINE!! And NOT Ellie!! I’m Apoorva from Elle online!! Do change my name, please 😫!!! 4. Maps in books are the best thing ever! For every story I write almost the first thing I do is draw a map. I HAVE to know where everything is, so that way it works.
I love fantasy. Definitely my favorite genre.
Here’s the thing about first person. The character has to have a really interesting mind. Like, I want them to think different thoughts and get you so wrapped up in their way of thinking that while you’re reading it’s like it’s you are doing the things. Does that make any sense? So, if first person is really well done, then I like it. But if not, give me that third person book.

Yeah! I love first person sometimes. I really liked it in Shatter me because it felt like I was in the MC's head. SO YES IT MAKES SENSE!

Yesss book mapsssss. I love the one from The Hobbit even MORE because it has a dragon on it…just…truly a work of art that i just want tattooed on my face!
Also Mary Lu, Leigh Bardugo and V. E. Schwab are QUEENS and i live and thrive on their dark delicious books. That is just the way things work!

  7. I quote everything ❤ As a fantasy reader and writer I relate to spiritual lever. Well, aside from writing becuase, who knows… the style might sucks.
But yes to all the rest.
And maps! I love when I found maps in books. They're super helpful. I mean, I can read about the description and everything but with a map I can really understand where the characters are.
Honestly, I think that all our kids should be named after fantasy names…. so, completely intented name thanks to smashing the keyboard with fingers. Sound like a legit plan to me.
I like 3rd person too! I use that for writing because of the heavy cast – I can switch to character to another easily – and I prefer that in general because I feel it like a real way to know everyone. And we need all more mythical creatures ❤

I’m actually that weirdo who skips the maps

Nope. Since I was six/seven, fantasy’s been my thing.

  10. I’ve been getting more and more into fantasy because of blog posts and bloggers just like you, screaming about the beauty of the genre haha. I discovered SO MANY amazing books, even if contemporary remains my favorite genre, I really love fantasy as well – and I agree, MAPS are so cool, I love them so much!
I really, reaaaaaaally want to read Ink and Bone someday because it sounds SO cool. Also….erm, I shall read Six of Crows one day hahaha. I think I need to hide after saying such a thing haha. I’m the only blogger left who hasn’t read it… oops.

Seriously, though? I LOVE that fantasy is a thing now because when I was growing up, other than Harry Potter and a handful of others, it still sort of wasn’t? I spent SO MUCH TIME defending my love of fantasy (still do – the people my age and older) and I just don’t get it? Why WOULDN’T you love something with pirates and sphinxes and magic. MAGIC.

  13. Yasss! I so need to read more fantasy, I’m kind of the opposite. I started off reading so much fantasy and then went into contemporaries and now I’m finally getting back into fantasy again because I’m totally sick of contemporary. You’re so right though, contemporary all feels the same to me now, I need something fresh and exciting! Also I looove maps, they’re so perfect!

  14. I never used to like fantasy either but I’ve recently been really enjoying reading different genres other than contemporary. I read This Savage Song a week or two ago and IT WAS SO GOOD! I don’t even know why I waited so long to pick it up?? It was like I was in a contemporary bubble and now it’s popped and I’ve realised how many books I’ve missed out on. Maps in books! YES! It just makes it so much easier to visualise things. I actually find it really interesting to look at the maps once I’ve finished a book just to see how my own view of a fantasy world differs from how it should actually look. Also you’re photos are so pretty – I love how they’re black and white!

  15. Yes!!!!! Fantasy is my absolute favourite genre! My tastes have changed a bit over the years, but fantasy has ALWAYS been my favourite.
Also yes for mythical creatures! Especially dragons, but I love all mythical creatures really.

  17. Ah, I absolutely love fantasy! I haven’t read it in a very long time, though; it’s been tough to read this year, and I miss it so much! 😩 But I agree with so many things on this list; maps and magic and mystical creatures and darkness and amazing characters! And there’s also so many different types of f stash out there for everyone; it has some of the best sub-genres! 😍

  18. Fantasy is my favorite genre too just because they can do things that would never be possible in reality. In fantasy the stakes are high and there are daring escapades that don’t need to follow the rules of our world and be realistic. I also love magic systems, they are the best and make reading so much more interesting. They really differentiate between series and there are just so many ways the magic can be used!!

I used to only read high fantasy (fantasy set in a different world) because so much of the urban fantasy (fantasy partly set in our world) was cliche, but Maggie Stiefvater has really changed my mind on that so she’s probably my favorite fantasy author (and favorite author full stop…). Her prose is just amazing and the stories she creates! ahhhhhhhhh!

  19. ERMEGERD MAPS ARE LITERALLY THE MOST LEGIT REASON OF EVER TO LOVE FANTASY. THEY ARE AMAZING. Also I get a little confused if a book doesn’t have magic in it?!?! Like…WHERE HAVE I LANDED??? ON MARS PROBABLY.
And yessss I love fantasy because I don’t need more of the world that I actually live in?! And all the magical creatures please. I will devour all of them ❤

  20. I love the post! Who doesn’t love magic in books? My only issue I’m so bad with maps! Usually, i just look at the map every time I meet a new place in the book and feel like “Ok, I got it”. But the next time I read about it I already forgot the whole map and don’t know where I am

  21. FANTASY MAPS ARE A BLESSING TO OUR EYEBALLS ON THIS EARTH. 😍😍 I love them so much ajfdkasld. I think even contemporaries should have maps. Like just give us maps omg.

Fantasy is also my #1 genre!! OF COURSE. I do love contemporary more these days than I used to but faaaantasy. ❤️ Schwab and Stiefvater and Clare are my fantasy QUEENS. I also love 3rd person so so much more than 1st. I find 1st is really easy for everyone to sound dull and almost whiny? Because maybe we’re too close to the narrator? 3rd gives it a bit of distance and actually makes the characters sound unique.

    ALSO KAZ BREKKER.😍

  22. I like 1st person too. I guess it depends on writing. Some writing is judt dull in any person -)) I guess writing from the first persone is more intimate and sometimes might not click with me. Like If I don’t agree or like the character.

  23. eeee, FANTASY IS THE BEST. stabbiness + magicalness + badass heroines = HAPPINESS. and yes, dragons have blessed the fantasy genre with their fabulousness, and THERE SHOULD BE MORE BOOKS THAT REVOLVE AROUND DRAGONS. just dragons. and possibly cake.

whenever I see a map, I’m filled with a sudden inexplicable desire to hug the book as hard as I can. MAPS JUST MAKE EVERYTHING 100000x better, don’t you think?? they’re so pretty, and they explain so much, and just… SKDFJ they’re amazing.

honestly, I think I’ve always really loved fantasy? it’s one of my fave genres (other than historical fic, of course, which is so UNDERRATED but that’s a conversation for another time!!) and hmm, I’d have to say my preference of POV depends on the book?? usually it’s 3rd person, just so the reader can also see what’s going in other character’s heads, but sometimes the story NEEDS an unreliable 1st person narrator.

super fun fun fun post!! (and yes, I said fun three times because your post was THAT fun.) ❤

  25. I tend to think we love fantasy because it goes back to our primitive ancestors, appealing to our mythopoeic thought. It’s the power of myth, with its symbols and archetypes, that speak to the human psyche, helping us find truth through fiction. These myths share commonalities throughout all cultures. Fantasy novels and short stories are our modern myths, except we acknowledge them as such instead of believing in them. But, just as the ancients needed to hear stories of gods, giants, magic, and monsters in order to make sense of things, so does modern society. Hence, Tolkien brought myths and legends back by taking the Norse myths and making it into his own, causing other writers to follow. Neil Gaiman said “Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.” That’s why I love fantasy.
